12/29 - Dora May Richards, 81 of Leeds, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at her residence.
She was born in Rumford, Oct. 22, 1928 the daughter of the late Charles N. and Mary L. DesRoches Porter. She was educated in the Rumford schools and was married to Harvey J. Richards, who predeceased her August 13, 2007. In her younger years she was employed as a short order cook at Freddy's Restaurant in Rumford. Later she, along with her husband owned and operated a stable of racehorses. There they trained and drove race horses in the 1950's until they retired in the 1970's. She still enjoyed going to the horse races in Maine and while living in Massachusetts she would go to Plainridge racecourse most every Monday and Tuesday.
Dora also enjoyed cooking and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan as well enjoyed going to the OTB in Lewiston. She was a member of the U.S.T.A. and the M.H.H.A.
 She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Parker and fiancé Gaetan Cloutier of Leeds and Pam Averill and husband Mark of Sabattus; two sons, Gary and wife Ginhee of Schenectady, N.Y. and Gerald and wife Sondra of Leeds; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Beaulieu of Yucaipa, California and Clara Bullen of Sabattus.
She was predeceased by a son, William "Terry", June 28, 2008 and three brothers, Fred, Billy and Francis Porter.
Visitations at Fortin/Lewiston on Wednesday from 2-4, 6-8 PM. Services will be held on Thursday at 12:00 Noon at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.

Scarborough Downs horsemen lend a helping hand in wake of tragic Ohio barn fire

12/08 - The horsemen at Scarborough Downs will be taking a collection in the paddock from Friday to Sunday to benefit the horsemen affected by the tragedy that happened to the Lebanon, Ohio horsemen. We encourage horsemen to contribute in the paddock or by sending a contribution to Scarborough Downs.

Horsemen planning to race the first weekend of 2010 at Scarborough Downs will not have to apply for licenses for 2010 as the Maine Harness Racing Commission will honor 2009 licenses for the first weekend of 2010.

The MHHA will also honor 2009 licenses and sulky insurance membership for the first weekend of racing at Scarborough in 2010

The MHHA office will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week in observance of Thanksgiving. The office will be open from 8 am to 1 pm Monday to Wednesday.

The MSBOA is seeking photographs of people and horses involved in the Maine Sire Stakes program in the 70s, 80s and 90s for use in the 2009 yearbook.  Please send your pictures to Barbara Dresser, 11 Tasker Street #6, Saco, ME  04072, along with a note identifying who is shown in each photo.  Be sure to include your name and address so that the photos can be returned to you.  The submission deadline is December 18.  Call Barbara at (207) 229-0636 with any questions.

The MSBOA is also asking stallion owners if they wish for their stallion's picture to be in the MSBOA yearbook . If you are interested, please fill out the form at this link and sent in your picture!

10/21 - Preston "Pete" Purinton Jr., 68, of Bowdoin, died in Lewiston October 19. In keeping with Mr. Purinton's wishes, there will be no services. Pete ran a public stable throughout Maine during the 70's and 80's with his wife, Martha. He also trained horses for Russ Wing and was his best friend.

The MSHRC has released a draft version of 2010 race dates for all venues. Please be aware that this is preliminary and will be discussed at the pre-hearing conference on October 28.

10/15 - The Maine State Harness Racing Commission has recalculated the purses for the stakes finals for this weekend. The 2 year old will now race for $52k+ and the 3 year olds will race for $77k+.

The MHHA Board of Directors is calling a special meeting of the Association for the purpose of discussing the 2010 race date proposals of Scarborough Downs and Bangor Historic Track. The meeting will be held at 5PM on Thursday October 22 in the Cumberland Room of the Augusta Civic Center.

Over $500K in purse money up for grabs in Maine Super Sire Stakes Weekend

Maine Sire Stakes Championship Weekend - by Stan Gutkowski

The Virginia horsemen that visited Scarborough Downs earlier this year will be back the weekend of Oct 31 - Nov 1. They are looking for 5-7 horses like the last time plus a couple of trotters, small, younger and flashy equals cash! Any questions please contact Butch Eaton at (207) 458-2369.

10/8 - The post position draw for the Sire Stakes Finals will be held Wednesday morning in the Downs Club Restaurant at Scarborough Downs at 11:00 am. ALL EIGHT DIVISIONS WILL BE DRAWN AT THIS TIME. Coffee and donuts will be available.

All horsemen and horsewomen are invited to attend a general meeting to be held at Scarborough Downs on Wednesday, October 14th in the Winner's Circle Lounge. The meeting will begin at 1:00 pm and the topic will be the 2010 racing schedule. Representative from both Scarborough Downs and the MHHA will be in attendance. We encourage all folks to attend!

10/7 - The sloppy conditions at Fryeburg Fair didn't stop CURRENT CLOSER from putting another track record on his resume for three year old trotting colts. He was driving once again by Mark Athearn, trained by Donnie Richards and owned by Tom Dillon and Walter Hight.
