GERALD L. MacKENZIE, 82, Passes Away
"A Man of Steel with a Heart of Gold"



Plymouth, ME - Gerald L. MacKenzie, 82, went to heaven on February 19, 2009, at his home surrounded by his wife and family. He was born July 19, 1926 in Millinocket, Maine.

He served as foreman for the State of Maine, Transportation Department for 37 1/2 years before retiring. He was also the road commissioner for Plymouth for over 25 years.

Gerald left Millinocket and moved to Plymouth and met Christie Hines, they were married July 31, 1946. They celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised nine children together, where their home had an open door policy for the many relatives and neighborhood children.

He enjoyed riding his horses, and later started breeding horses and racing colts at the Maine Fairs. He owned, trained and drove throughout his racing career. Some of the horses that graced the MacKenzie Stable were MAC'S PRIDE, MISS DIANNE D, WAGON MASTER, PLYMOUTH MAC, LITTLE RIVER MAC, MAC'S MISS KRIS, KNIGHT BALLERINA and SCOTTY MACBARON. Although the whole family was involved in the racing scene, two of his sons, Gerald, Jr. and Scott have had successful careers under the guidance of Gerald.

He loved music, playing his guitar and singing with his family. Fishing was a great enjoyment when he retired. He loved to hunt, he and his wife enjoyed coon hunting and deer hunting together and teaching their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren hunter safety and how to hunt. He spent many hours at his hunting camp with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife Christie M. MacKenzie of Plymouth, five daughters Linda and Mike Seavey of Plymouth, Brenda & Philip Ripton of Newport, Sharon & Tom McDonald of Bangor, Lorraine & Aaron Hawthorne of Newport, Kris MacKenzie and Todd Braley of Newport, three sons Gerald "Butch" & Laurie MacKenzie of Etna, George "Buck" & Betty MacKenzie of Newport, Scott & Allison MacKenzie of Plymouth. He will now be with his son James "Jim" MacKenzie who died in 2003 and grandson Ryan MacKenzie. Papa MacKenzie will be loved and missed by his grandchildren, Jonathan & Wife Nancy Seavey, Dover Foxcroft, Leslie & Husband Jason Feid, North Attleboro, MA, Amie Seavey, Hermon, Angela & Husband Matt Brown, Palmyra, Trisha Ripton, CT., Jared Ripton, Newport, Amanda Ripton, Millinocket, Joshua Ripton, Newport, Matt & wife Linarre McDonald, Belfast, Christopher & wife Megan McDonald, Howland, Kurt & wife Heather MacKenzie, Palmyra, Cain MacKenzie, Newport, Elizabeth & husband Kevin Switzer, Cumberland, Aaron & wife Shelly Hawthorne, Texas, Laurie & husband Bill Butland, Etna, Adam & wife Liz Hawthorne, Newport, Craig & Jessie Hawthorne, Newport, Sarah MacKenzie, New York, Ashley MacKenzie, Florida, Tyler MacKenzie, Newport, Zachery Leal, Newport, MacKenzie Leal, Newport, Anna MacKenzie & Isaac MacKenzie, Plymouth and 23 great grandchildren. Uncle Gerald will be remembered by a dear niece and her husband, Dawn & Paul Rutkowski, Newport. He was predeceased by his brother Kenneth MacKenzie, Robert MacKenzie, Tom MacKenzie, sisters Dorothy Thomen, Annie Castle, and Lula Judkins.

Friends may call 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 6:00pm - 8:00 pm Saturday February 21 at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home in Newport. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at the Emmanuel Bible Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Emrich & Pastor Richard Berry officiating.
