Maine State Racing Commission Meets to Discuss 2009 Race Dates

Augusta Maine - November 12, 2008 - The Maine Racing Commission met today to discuss allocation of the 2009 harness racing dates. This was a pre-hearing conference to discuss dates and no dates were awarded today. The Commission will meet on November 19 to award dates.

The nine agricultural fairs discussed their dates first with the only change from 2008 was from Northern Maine Fair, which switched their Sunday card to the first Saturday of their fair.

Bangor Raceway requested 56 racing days starting April 17. They added Saturday, May 16, to coincide with the Preakness Stakes and Saturday, June 6 to coincide with the Belmont Stake. Absent from Bangor's application was November racing with the exception of November 1. The MHHA and several horsemen spoke up stating that those dates were needed with the demand of an increased horse population. The MHHA also proposed adding three additional dates in September and three additional dates in October. Those dates coincided with Oxford, Cumberland and Fryeburg Fairs. Data was provided to show that the increased horse population would not harm those fairs. The commission told the standing room only crowd that the MHHA needs to sit down with Bangor and the fairs before the November 19 meeting to come to an agreeable solution that would make all parties happy.

Scarborough Downs requested 129 dates for 2009. Those dates included the first two weekends in January and restarting a spring meet on April 10, with a Thursday to Sunday schedule similar to 2008.

Dates will be awarded at the next meeting on November 19, 2008. Below is the draft copy of applied dates. It is to be reiterated that these dates have not been awarded and are subject to change before the November 19 meeting.
