Scarborough, Maine – December 31, 2007 : Scarborough Downs is pleased to kick off its 2008 harness racing season with 8 live race days in January as well as daily gas card giveaways.
The 2008 Harness meet begins Saturday, January 5th with live racing every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month with a new post time of 12:30 pm.
“January racing is brand new for us,” said President Sharon Terry. “It gives the horse men and women an opportunity to race, and the fans won’t have to wait until April to enjoy live racing.”
“We’re also excited to be giving away lots of stuff this January too,” added Marketing Director, Susan Higgins. “We’re drawing a winner for a $25 gas card every live race day, with a Grand Prize drawing of a $100 gas card on Sunday, January 27th.” The more patrons attend the races, the more chances there are to win. In addition to gas cards, participants can win T-shirts, hats, Budweiser gear, coupons for free items in Concessions or more entry blanks for the drawing. All participants must be present to win.
Scarborough Downs will then break and return on April 11th to continue its racing season with racing on Fridays and Saturdays at 4:15 pm and Sundays at 1:30 pm. Thursdays will be added on May 1st with a 4:15 post time. The Downs Club is slated to open for dinner Friday, April 18th.
“This year is going to be chock full of excitement and activity,” said Publicity Director Mike Sweeney.” We’ve got an arsenal of things planned for the track, including top racing, premier invitationals, a two-day, $2.1 million Stakes weekend, and even more special events and promotions than ever before.”
The track also anticipates the opening of its harness racing Hall of Fame in its Grandstand, which will feature vintage harness racing memorabilia from around Maine that has been donated to the track. There will be a Grand Opening Gala for members of the Press and harness racing industry VIPs in early April.
The 129-date Scarborough Downs 2008 Harness Meet runs through Sunday, December 29th, with free admission all season long.
Special matinee cards will also be run on the Triple Crown race days: Saturday, May 3rd (Kentucky Derby), May 17th (Preakness Stakes) and June 7th (Belmont Stakes), with a 2:00 pm post time.
