Michael M. Sweeney for Scarborough Downs
Scarborough, Maine – Skitsofrantic, making his first start back in Maine after a winter-long Saratoga sojourn posted a major upset at Scarborough Downs on Saturday crushing the $6000 Open-class field at 7-1 and keying a pricey $708 Trifecta return to his faithful backers.
Owned by Donald Bailey of Schenectady, NY and Carmine La Rosa of Camden, NJ, Skitsofrantic posted the fastest race time of the newly opened 2008 state of Maine harness season – tripping the tele-timer in 1:56-4/5th with Shane Taggart controlling the lines for up-and-coming trainer Andrew Bailey.
It was the third consecutive victory for the Pennsylvania-bred son of Covert Action who had just last week equaled his own lifetime mark of 1:56 at Saratoga Raceway.
Rob Dinning held the hot hand at the Downs on Saturday though as the winner of the 2007 Freeman Parker award worked out three winning strategies, parading Lightnin Spur, Barenit and Rama’s Fantasy down the Down East victory lane for top Scarborough trainer Randy Bickmore.
Drew Campbell joined Dinning and Bickmore on the multiple winners list on Saturday driving two from his own stable roster to victory – Joel Wheeler’s Conquiestdonor and Deborah Whittemore’s My Special Angel.
In other news, the fans where delighted to meet Scarborough Downs’ new resident mascot on Saturday as Henry the mini-horse made his first grandstand appearance of the season.
Henry will be attending the races at Scarborough on each and every live racing day throughout the year.
Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness excitement every Friday and Saturday at 4:15 PM (EDT) with the popular Sunday matinee cards rolling in behind the gate quite promptly at 1:30 PM.
