For the second
week in a row, Landmark Honor was one-fifth of a second better than
Woodmere Fulatrix at Scarborough Downs.
When Landmark Honor won in 1:57.4 last week, the time became the fastest mile of the in Maine. The previous mark had been established one race earlier, when Woodmere Fulatrix scored a 1:58 victory of his own In his victory in a winners-over pace at Scarborough on Saturday afternoon, Landmark Honor once again stopped the timer at 1:574. Woodmere Fulatrix finished second, one and one-quarter lengths back. And though it was the second victory in as many local starts for Landmark Honor -- it was anything but easy. After getting away last in the seven horse field, driver Irv Mauran and Landmark Honor were nine lengths off the pace at the halfway point. Powerhouse Sahbra, the betting favorite, had been parked beyond the quarter pole, reached in :274, and Morty (Jason Bartlett) made a first-over move as the field hit the half-mile pole in :574. Woodmere Fulatrix (Wallace Watson) grabbed the live cover, Mauran took a third over trip, but Landmark Honor was still four lengths off of the pace as the field passed the three-quarter pole in 1:28. At that point, Powerhouse Sahbra faltered and Morty became the new leader, but faced an immediate challenge from Woodmere Fulatrix. As the field hit the top of the lane, Landmark Honor was still two lengths off of the pace, but as he did one week ago he one-upped Woodmere Fulatrix, who briefly took the lead in mid-stretch. Morty finished third, three and one-quarter lengths back. Landmark Honor is owned by Andrew Cohen and Joseph Palmeri of New York and New Jersey, and is trained by Cheryl Mauran. Saturday's win was the 57th career victory for the 9-year-old gelding. |
