Current Cast established a seasonal standard for the state of Maine Friday evening when he cruised to a 2:00.2 victory in the featured trotting event of the week at Scarborough Downs.

Veteran driver Don Richards was at the controls as Current Cast grabbed the lead leaving the starting gate and was never seriously threatened. The duo cruised to a five and a quarter length victory over Pine Magic (Kim Ireland), with Unshaken (Shane Taggart) finishing third.

It was the first win in four seasonal starts for Current Cast, who is owned by Jim Doherty, Tom Dillon and Walter Hight. Richards does the training.

Bangor Raceway also hosted its feature trotting event on Friday, and for the second consecutive week the spoils went to Pembroke Marvel. With regular pilot Heath Campbell in the sulky, Pembroke Marvel was a half-length better than Classic Andy (Cain MacKenzie,) while Opal (Jason Bartlett) finished third. Pembroke Marvel is owned by Bill Varney of Bangor and trained by Valerie Grondin.

Baby races continued at Scarborough Downs on Friday evening, and each rookie event resulted in a photo finish.

In the two-year-old trot Mom’s Angel was a neck better than Forward Action (Ron Patoine,) with Knotch Hill Kimmie (Rick Flanders) finishing third. Moms Angel, who is owned by Joel Wheeler of Pepperell, Massachusetts, was driven by trainer Gordon Corey.

The event for pacers saw Dealmeindiamonds rally in the closing strides to prevail by a head over the front running Landmark Terrific (Irv Mauran.) Mr. Norm (Billy Loubier) finished third. Don and Linda Marean, Steve Nason, and Andrew Harrington own Dealmeindiamonds.

Baby races continue Saturday evening at Bangor Raceway.
