Opening round action in the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes continued on Friday evening, when Bangor Raceway hosted a pair of divisions for 3-year-old pacing fillies. Baton (Jason Bartlett) prevailed in the first division, in which she wore down her rival, Blond Moment (Wallace Watson), in the final strides and prevailed by a neck. Queen of Pembroke (Heath Campbell) finished third in the 1:592 mile. Baton is owned by the RAM Racing Stables of Portland, Maine and is trained by Richard Bartlett. Jason Bartlett’s driving victory aboard Baton was one of four he posted on Friday evening. In the second $5,576 division, Steve Mahar steered Ohyoulittlething to an upset victory, when the duo came from well off the pace and won by better than three lengths. The front-running Hasta Luego Baby (Drew Campbell) held on and finished second, and Pembroke Annie Mac (Heath Campbell) finished third. Ohyoulittlething is owned and trained by Donald Bishop of Fredericton, N.B., and the 2:01.1 mile established a lifetime mark for the daughter of Merrilywerollalong. The Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes will resume on Saturday night at Bangor Raceway, when the 3-year-old trotters take center stage. On Sunday afternoon the action will move south to Scarborough Downs, and will feature legs for both 2- and 3year pacing colts. |
