POP N PAULA DOUBLES UP AT SCARBOROUGH
By Paul Verrette

Pop N Paula overcame several obstacles en route to her second win in as many lifetime starts Wednesday evening as the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes continued at Scarborough Downs.

The two-year-old filly was hampered by post seven in the nine horse field, had to deal with traffic difficulties at the starting gate, then faced an overland trip for much of the mile. Still, Pop N Paula was able to draw clear and win the $5,959 event by more than a length for driver Gary Mosher. Layla, who cut the mile for driver Kim Ireland, held ground for second, while E Louise and David Hall grabbed the show spot. Pop N Paula is owned by Sheridan Smith of Farmington, Maine, and is trained by Mosher.

In earlier action for freshman trotting colts and geldings, Pembroke Fox scored his consecutive stakes victory for driver Heath Campbell. Owned by Bill Varney of Bangor and trained by Valerie Grondin, Pembroke Fox took control at the quarter pole and led the rest of the way. Guess Its True, with trainer Brian Nelson aboard finished second, while Forward Momentum and Gordon Corey were third. The victory for Pembroke Fox was the seventh win for the Varney Stable in MSBS competition since the 2005 season began on June 26th.

Elsewhere on the Scarborough card, driver Jason Bartlett continues to have the hot hand. He won four of the ten races on the program, including the final three of the evening.

Maine Sire Stakes action continues Friday and Saturday evening at Bangor Raceway, before returning to Scarborough Downs on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, the CKG Billings Amateur Driving Series will also visit Scarborough and Bangor respectively.
