A pair of Maine owned three year olds won championship events at Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville, Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon during the finals of that state’s sire stakes program. Kosmos Jazz, owned by Ival Cianchette of Falmouth, won the Massachusetts Sire Stake Final for three year old trotting colts and geldings. Brad Irvine, the leading driver at Plainridge, guided Kosmos Jazz to a gate to wire victory in the event which was contested for a purse of $26,829. Another Falmouth resident visited the winner’s circle later on in the day, when Hurricane Emily won the $22,000 Massachusetts Sire Stake final for three year old pacing fillies. Hurricane Emily is owned by Jeffrey Graffam and was driven to victory by trainer Mike Graffam. It marked the second time in a little over three weeks that the Graffam stable had won a stake final. Mike Graffam won the $21,117 Maine Sire Stake final for freshman pacers with Rollin’ West at Scarborough Downs on September 11th. While the sire stake season in the Bay State is over, the Maine Sire Stakes continue through the middle of October. The Cumberland Fair will host preliminary legs on September 28 through September 30th and the Fryeburg Fair will also host legs on October 5th through October 7th. The lucrative finals for both three year olds pacers and trotters will be held at Scarborough Downs on October 16th. |
