Sweeney Joins Scarborough Downs Team By - Scarborough Downs Publicity Department Scarborough, Maine – With only one month until the Call To Post is sounded on the 2007 season, Scarborough Downs is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Sweeney to their management team. Sweeney will be utilized in a variety of capacities in the Racing Department including; Publicity Director, Back-up Announcer and Special Assistant to Race Secretary, Joe Figiulo. "I welcome the opportunity to tell the world about the excitement that is brewing here at Scarborough Downs," said Sweeney. "Purses have increased dramatically since the advent of VLTs in the state and the corresponding enthusiasm that is evident in all aspects of the industry is infectious. The 2007 meeting at The Downs should, by all accounts, be record breaking." Sweeney brings a broad spectrum of experience to the job – from both sides of the hub rail. He has served in various capacities in the Racing and Publicity Departments at tracks in Maine, Massachusetts and New York and was elected to the Board of Directors of both The Maine Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association and The Saratoga Harness Horseman’s Association. Most recently, Sweeney had operated a public racing stable at Saratoga Raceway. He was named Maine’s Trainer of the Year in 2001 and received the Peerless McGrath award as the up and coming trainer at Saratoga in 2002. Live harness action returns to Scarborough Downs beginning April 14th. First post is scheduled for 3:45 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday afternoons while the popular Sunday matinee performances get under way at 12:05 pm.
