WHITLOCK N, the classy 14-year-old and former divisional track record holder, ended
his state of Maine racing career on a winning note at Scarborough Downs on Saturday,
charging hard to the wire and persevering in the final strides to secure his 68th
career victory. Kevin Switzer, Jr. (whose family owned and campaigned Whitlock
N for most of his storied career), called the shots from the sulky for current
owner/trainer Kenneth Sumner of Mechanic Falls, Maine, working out the winning
strategy for the mile timed in 2:00.3.
Approaching mandatory retirement and with his racing days growing short, Whitlock
N still has two major engagements to honor in the coming week. First, he will be
participating in Scarborough's annual retirement ceremony on Sunday (12/23), joining
seven other 14-year-olds in one final parade before the stands and his adoring
public. Then on Thursday, December 27, he'll take the trek to New York to make
his final career appearance in the Au Revoir Pace at Monticello Raceway. No doubt,
the entire state of Maine will be cheering the veteran pacer on.
In other news, the blue and gold colors of top western New York teamster Shawn
Gray graced the seaside oval on Saturday, as Scarborough's former leading driver
revisited his old home track in the midst of his Christmas vacation. It was a successful
homecoming for the state of Maine native who dominated the action on the afternoon
program, scoring four wins on the card.
The 2012 Scarborough Downs meeting concludes on Sunday with closing day post slated
for 12:05 PM (EST)
