Scarborough, Maine – SJ’s Character became the latest in a long line of new track record holders at Scarborough Downs this season as the precocious sophomore pacer toured the seaside oval in a lifetime best of 1:56.1 with driver/trainer Ivan Davies engineering the winning strategy during the Saturday (July 19) evening card.

Owned by the New Brunswick consortium of Owen Davis and Richard and Tim Cluff, the son of Shady Character became the fastest three-year-old pacer ever to parade victorious at Scarborough Downs, besting Didgeridoo’s (David Ingraham) previous standard of 1:56.4 which had stood since the year 2000.

SJ’s Character sat third behind the robust pace set by My Special Angel (Drew Campbell) through opening panels of 28.4 and 58.3 before poking his nose to the top as they passed three-parts in 1:27 flat. The striking gelding then coasted to the wire in 1:56.1 a length-and-a-half the best over Harmony Oakes John (Rob Dinning) and Superman’s Cape (Heath Campbell).

The new track record holder returned $5.40 - $4.20 – 2.60 while recording only the third win of his young career.

Scarborough Downs proudly features live harness racing every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 4:15 pm (EDT). The popular Sunday matinees feature a 1:30 pm post time.
