It has been called "The Summer of Speed" and the 2010 Maine racing season has been just that. At the end of the Windsor Fair there have been 43 new track records at the various venues in Maine. ME Harness has been keeping records since 2003 and 2010 has had the most track records set for the first eight months of the year.

Although we have kept up on the track records in the listings found on this site, we have not given announcement of some of these track records. We also have a correction to an earlier record that was in error. Let's catch up now.

The newest track records were at Windsor Fair. On Labor Day Monday VICTORY TAX, a four year old trotting gelding set a new track record in 1:58.1 with Drew Campbell driving for trainer Steve Vafiades and owner Kyle Gibbs. It was also a state record.

KEYSTONE NATALIE also hit the records book for fastest mare at Windsor, pacing in 1:54.2 for driver Drew Campbell, trainer Randy Bickmore and owner Richard Knight.

Earlier in the week, EAST COAST WATERS, a four year old mare owned and trained by Stan Bubier, Jr. set a new track record in 1:55.4 with driver Ron Cushing.

At Scarborough, IZA BELLA, a two year old trotting filly set a new track record of 2:03.0 with Ivan Davies training and driving for owner Michael Andrew. It was also a State record.

At Union Fair, TAKE THE RISK tied the all age track record with Greg Bowden driving for trainer Shawn Nye and owner Gardiner Patterson. It was later broken later in the week by REDSTONE RUCKUS and then BLUERIDGE TOOQUICK.

Also at Union Fair, RAINING CREDIT set a new mark for Aged Trotting Mares in 2:02 for owner and trainer Stan Bubier, Jr. and was driven by Doug Gray. YANKEE CREDIT also set a mark for four year old trotting mares in 2:05.0 with Rob Dinning driving for owner, trainer Jon Chenard.

At Skowhegan State Fair there were six track records set, which included RODEO DU RUISSEAU’s 1:52.3 trip. CASINO KING set a new mark for aged horses in 1:54.4 for driver/trainer Shawn Thayer and owner Danny King.

CRANMEADOW EXPRESS set a new state record for two year old gelding trotters in 2:02.2 for owner/trainer/driver Paul Battis. SOS DAYDREAMER set a new standard for four year old trotting mares in 2:02.3 for driver Heath Campbell and owner/trainer Bernard Charlton.

In Stakes action, KATAHDIN BOY set a mark of 1:57.3 for three year old colts. He was driven by Shawn Gray for trainer David Crochere and owners Tom Perkins and Linwood Higgins. CURRENT IMAGE set a mark of 2:01.4 for three year old colt trotters with Mark Athearn driving for trainer Donald Richards and owners Thomas Dillon and Walter Hight.

Topsham Fair saw three new track records. HOOPER, owned and trained by James Smallwood, set the standard for three year old colts in 1:59.4 with Jason Bartlett driving. PEMBROKE NICK then broke that record a couple of races later in 1:59.1 for driver Heath Campbell, trainer Valerie Grondin, and owner Bill Varney. Bernard Charlton’s SOS DAYDREAMER also set a mark of 2:03.4 with Heath Campbell driving.

Earlier this summer, we reported that at the Northern Maine Fair, CYBER CAST set a track record for two year old trotting colts. John Michalowski alerted us to a race in 1997 when ABSOLUTELY FABULUS trotted a mile in 2:05.2 with Kim Ireland driving for owner/trainer Ray Ireland. We have corrected this, giving credit where due.
