Fryeburg Fair Concludes Maine Fair Racing Season

Maine’s Fryeburg Fair concluded its annual meet and thus another season of Maine Fair racing came to an end. Fryeburg’s week long racing schedule was highlighted by a new track record on the trot and a driver reaching a career driving milestone.

In the Annual Ed Keller Memorial Trot, Seaside, a four year old mare, trotted to a new all age track record of 1:59.1 for trainer Donald Richards and owner Thomas Dillon. She was driven by Mark Athearn.

Other track records included Wild Run Hanover, a three year old trotting colt, going the mile in 2:05.1 for trainer/driver Wallace Watson and owner Robert Harmon on Friday. Had To Be Me’s 1:57.4 trip on Saturday was a divisional track record for four year old geldings for driver Drew Campbell, trainer Joseph Nelson and owners Kevin & Benjamin Hebert. David Miller’s Badpan grabbed the track record for aged trotting mares in 2:02.4 with Drew Campbell in the sulky.

Heath Campbell captured career win #3,500 on Saturday in the 4th race behind DW’s Abby in 1:59.2. Campbell also grabbed the driving title for the week with 12 wins. Drew Campbell was second in the standings with 11 wins and Shawn Gray had 10.

On the training side, Ron Dinsmore was the leading trainer with 5 wins, Charlene Cushing was second with 4 and Joe Nelson, Shawn Nye and Steve Vafiades had 3 wins each.

With the Maine fair season coming to a close recognition goes out to top driver and trainer. Heath Campbell took top honors this year with 89 wins on the circuit. Greg Bowden was second with 63 victories. Shawn Gray (62), Drew Campbell (52), Ron Cushing (33), Steve Mahar (32), Rob Dinning (28), Kevin Switzer (26), Mark Athearn (19), and Kevin Switzer, Jr (13) rounded out the top ten.

On the training side, top marks went to Michael Hitchcock with 29 wins. Steve Vafiades and Shawn Nye each had 24 wins. Phil Sowers (23), Joe Nelson (19), Donald Richards (19), Valerie Grondin (18), Kevin Switzer (15), David Crochere (15) and Sherry Cushing (14) rounded out the top ten.

Racing in Maine continues at Bangor Raceway starting Tuesday, October 12 and Scarborough Downs on Friday, October 15. Scarborough Downs will also hold the Three Year Old Maine Sire Stakes Finals on Sunday, October 17 with an estimated $240,000 in purses up for grabs.
